As with other aspects of measuring, pupils will initially use non-standard units for exploring capacity, e.g. small yoghurt pots to fill a jug, before moving on to measure in litres and millilitres by learning to accurately read scales.

In this collection we have fantastic activities and worksheets on capacity, all shared by teaching professionals. These help pupils firstly to acquire the language needed to describe volume, then to explore measuring liquid with non-standard units; and finally to accurately measure out liquids, read scales and record findings.

Non-standard units

Capacity Worksheet

Pictures of different containers for children to order from smallest to largest by capacity, and pictures of one container full, empty and at stages inbetween for labelling.

Capacity

Children label the glasses according to how much is in them and then they draw in the water level according to the label.

Capacity colour and order activity

The children colour in the amount of liquid in a cup relating to its description (half full, empty, etc) and then put in order.

Capacity - estimating and checking capacity using non-standard measure

A recording sheet for estimating the capacity of different containers and then checking the estimations.

Capacity - Full, Half Full, Nearly Full, Empty

Aimed at Y1, an activity to fill a cup, draw on the water level and label the cup appropriately.

Container Capacity

A practical activity to estimate how many smaller containers’ worth of water will fill various larger containers. Pupils then determine if their prediction was correct or incorrect.

Litre and millilitres

Reading measure scales

These differentiated worksheets ask children to either read a scale or draw on measures.

Measures - capacity

Measures - capacity

Reading scales from measuring jugs

Children read the scales of the measuring jug to state how much water is in each and then find which contains the most/least.

Problem Solving - Capacity

A set of cards with capacity, time and length problems.

Magic Potions - Measuring Capacity

An exciting activity to measure out liquids to make ‘magic potions’ by following the recipes.

Mighty measures

Powerpoint presentation for introducing different measuring media.

Capacity

A practical activity to estimate volume and to think about capacity.

Measures (Teachers TV)

Two primary schools use fun games to engaging children in learning about measures.

Capacity - drawing amount by reading scale

Pupils draw on the water level written underneath each jug by reading the scale correctly. Easily adapted and differentiated.

Capacity - reading scales

Three differentiated worksheets that involve the children reading the scales and recording the amount of liquid.

Litres or millilitres?

A sorting activity in Notebook format.

Units of Measurement

A fantastic revision tool to check that pupils understand appropriate units for measurement, for time, weight, length and capacity.

Units of Measurement

A PPT to consolidate units of measurement, by helping the Builder. Great for revision of appropriate units.

Conversion Line - Capacity

Printable Conversion Lines to help pupils convert between measurement units, using litres, millilitres and fractions of a litre.
